Teach truth in textbooks, not ideologies, says Bhyrappa

Bhyrappa said he will not give any suggestion in connection with the inclusion or dropping of topics in textbooks

Amidst the ongoing controversies over the revision of textbooks and the revision committee headed by Rohith Chakrathirtha, writer S L Bhyrappa said on Thursday that children should be taught the truth and not someone’s ideologies. Bhyrappa told a press conference that truth must be found out and it should be incorporated into the curriculum. “A few persons are creating issues over the revision of textbooks and thus pressure is mounted on the government,” he said. The writer compared the ongoing protest to the agitation by writers against Narendra Modi when he became prime minister. They returned awards as a mark of protest against Modi. But everyone knows what happened to the protest after a few days, he pointed out. “AWriter S L Bhyrappa. Credit: DH Photo few people launched an agitation when Modi came to power. I recommended taking back the money given with the award. The agitation by resigning from posts against the textbooks review committee is another such protest,” he said. Bhyrappa said a few people targeted Education Minister B C Nagesh and made a futile attempt to torch his house. However, the police prevented it. He suspected ‘powerful hands’ behind the incident and said, unless there is strong support, such incidents will not occur. “If we do not have unity, how can we protect our freedom,” he asked. Bhyrappa said he will not give any suggestion in connection with the inclusion or dropping of topics in textbooks. Bhyrappa slammed the supporters of Tipu Sultan and asked them to read ‘Real Tipu,’ to know his real face. Rangayana Mysuru director Addanda C Cariappa, who is from Kodagu, is well aware of Tipu and his atrocities in Kodagu.

Pictures of vermicelli being dried on the grand steps went viral on social media and made way for a lot of discussion on the underutilisation of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. Ever since the State’s second secretariat was inaugurated, there has been a demand for shifting prominent secretariat-level government offices to its premises to make it a power centre. Lamentably, successive governments failed to meet the demand. Around a year ago, some district-level offices that had been functioning in rented buildings were shifted to the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha which made it appear like Mini Vidhana Soudha. The only State-level office functioning here is the Information Commissioner’s Office. As State-level offices have not been shifted and movement of people to the district-level offices to is a minimum, innocent labourers deployed for upkeep are using the premises as per their convenience. A woman labourer identified as Mallavva working on a daily wage basis on the premises of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha had purchased vermicelli in large quantities to meet the requirements of her family. As the food product was yet to be dried up completely, Mallavva, unaware of the importance of the building, spread a towel on the grand steps of the building, spread a towel on the grand steps of the State’s second secretariat and kept the vermicelli for drying. The bag in which she had brought the vermicelli too was seen spread near the sun-drying vermicelli. Public Works Department Assistant Executive Engineer S L Bhim informed DH that as soon as the incident came to his notice, he rushed to the spot and asked the labourer to take off the vermicelli from the steps. She was also relieved from work.
