BJP eyes Vokkaliga votes with Jaggesh’s Rajya Sabha entry
Iit will help the party balance the caste equation of its candidates as none of the four candidates for the Legislative Council is a Vokkaliga
DHNS, Bengaluru, MAY 30 2022
The surprise selection of actor-politician Jaggesh as the BJP’s second candidate for the June 10 Rajya Sabha election is aimed at serving several purposes, say party sources. The primary objective is to woo the Vokkaliga community – especially in the old Mysuru region, where the BJP is looking to improve its prospects in the Assembly elections scheduled next year. Moreover, it will help the party balance the caste equation of its candidates as none of the four candidates for the Legislative Council is a Vokkaliga. Since Jaggesh enjoys mass appeal due to his popularity as a film actor, he can be roped in as a star campaigner during elections, it is said. The party also had to ‘rehabilitate’ him as he was earlier the BJP candidate from Yeshwantpur in the past. His hopes of getting the BJP ticket again was affected after Cooperation Minister S T Somashekhar, formerly with the Congress, switched to BJP. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Jaggesh said his nomination came as a surprise as he had not expected to be a Rajya Sabha member. “I was serving the party loyally. The chief minister, ministers, MLAs and seniors from the Sangh decided to give me this position,” he said.
Congress high command prevails over Karnataka unit in selection of RS polls candidates
It was suggested that the seat should be given to a Christian community leader since the seat fell vacant after the death of Oscar Fernandes

The Congress high command prevailed upon Karnataka Congress leaders and cleared the renomination of former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election, despite their opposition. Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Pradesh Congress president D K Shivakumar met the party general secretary in charge of Karnataka affairs Randeep Surjewala to discuss Rajya Sabha candidates in Delhi recently. The Congress central leader communicated to them the instructions from Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi that Jairam Ramesh will be the candidate and the state leaders should ensure his victory. Since Congress can win one seat comfortably in the election from the state, Siddaramaiah suggested the candidature of former MLC Ivan D’souza. However, Shivakumar favoured giving the ticket to family members of the late Oscar Fernandes. Both the leaders, while opposing the re-nomination of Jairam Ramesh, suggested that this seat should be given to a Christian community leader since the seat fell vacant after the death of Oscar Fernandes. The state leaders are said to have suggested that fielding a Christian leader would ensure representation to the community and would help the party in next year’s assembly polls. The state leaders’ grouse against Jairam Ramesh was that he was always aloof and did not raise state issues prominently in the Upper House. But the party central leaders refused to budge on fielding Jairam Ramesh. They asked the state leaders to field a second candidate of their choice if required. Jairam Ramesh, who is close to Sonia, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, always played a key role in the preparation of the party manifesto, relying upon various reports on the Modi government’s failures, and drafting resolutions in important party meetings.

BJP vs BJP in East Delhi unit, Gautam Gambhir in eye of storm
Sharma, in a letter to state president Adesh Gupta, accused the MLA of issuing false statements against Gambhir to the media and of constantly speaking against the party.
Discontent has surfaced in the BJP’s East Delhi unit, with district president from Shahdara Ram Kishore Sharma writing a letter to the state unit head, demanding action against Gandhi Nagar MLA Anil Bajpai for “conspiring” against East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir. Sharma, in a letter to state president Adesh Gupta, accused the MLA of issuing false statements against Gambhir to the media and of constantly speaking against the party.Bajpai hit back, saying that he has never spoken against the MP or the party. “I have no ill will against him (Gambhir). I have never engaged in anti-party activities,” he said. Sharma, in the letter, said Gambhir arranged for them to stay in the same hotel as him and they went to meet him. An aide of Gambhir claimed: “As the MP was quarantining, he met the district president and former councillor from a distance. However, the MLA from Gandhi Nagar claimed that Gambhir meets karyakartas at a distance or uses sanitiser after meeting them.” Bajpai, however, said the district president should have clarified things with him first. “It is he (Sharma) who has engaged in anti-party activities by writing such a letter,” he said. When contacted, Gambhir told The Indian Express that everything is in the public domain and such things have been happening for a long time: “It is for the state leadership to decide if they want it to be this way or take some action.”
