Even as ‘Moolamandira chalo’, a movement of Hindu outfits to perform puja at Jamia Masjid in Srirangapatna on Saturday was a damp squib, right wing activists expressed mixed reactions over the controversy and recent developments. Santhosh Gowda, a Hindu activist and also a businessman, said that Jamia Masjid is a national monument and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). “I do not agree with those activists, who demand that the structure should be restored into a temple. It should be maintained and conserved, as it is. Its evolution, over the past 800 or 1,000 years, is history. We do not need an expert, to tell us that it was a temple, before it was modified into the present form. Every pillar of the structure reveals its past form,” he said. We do not need an expert, to tell us that it was a temple, before it was modified into the present form. Every pillar of the structure reveals its past form,” he said. Gowda said, “My only demand is that the ASI, as well as other historians, should tell the truth, that it is a centuries old place of worship and that it was converted into the present form by Tipu Sultan, before Mysuru State was restored to the custody of the Wadiyar kings.” H B Gowtham, a Hindu activist and engineering student, said, “If Jamia Masjid is a protected monument under the ASI, human activity, other than conservation and tourism, should be banned. Thus, the residents of the structure should be vacated.”
Congress won’t allow saffronised textbooks, says Rahul Gandhi
Despite Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s damage control measures, the Congress led by its former president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday kept up the ante against the BJP government over the revised school textbooks. “The Congress will not allow textbooks that will be fatal for Karnataka’s diversity,” Rahul said in a series of tweets in Kannada. This comes a day after Bommai said the government would revise portions on Lingayatism founder Basavanna while defending the revised textbooks. Also, Bommai said the textbook revision committee headed by Rohith Chakratirtha stands dissolved.
“People of Karnataka have always followed social justice and ideals of unity and humanity propounded by great beings,” Rahul said.“The BJP is trying to use textbooks to teach children ideas that go against the life and identity of great beings such as BR Ambedkar, Buddha-Basavanna, Narayana Guru and Kuvempu,” he said, adding that the future of children was given to “ineligible hands”.Rahul said the revised textbooks have excluded lessons on social justice, regionalism and gender equality. “The attempt to teach children saffonised lessons is an insult to India, which is the cradle of diversity,” he said, adding that Congress is committed to protect Kannada and its writers.Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah said dissolution of the Chakratirtha committee was not enough. “If a prejudiced chairman is removed, then how can we accept the textbook revised by his committee,” he asked. “CM has said that the text on Basavanna will be revised after hearing all the objections. Does this mean the revised textbook will be dropped for this academic year?” The former CM pointed out that many senior writers had withdrawn their works from the revised textbooks. “How can these controversial revised textbooks be used in schools? The only solution to this confusion is to scrap these controversial revised textbooks, constitute a new committee and continue to use the old textbooks,” he said.
Throw revised syllabus into dustbin, says Siddaramaiah
He also said that Basavanna and Dr B R Ambedkar were neglected in the revised syllabus and were insulted as they changed their religion
IANS, Bengaluru, JUN 05 2022
Even as Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai disbanded the Textbook Revision Committee and tried to pull down the curtains on the controversy surrounding syllabus revision, leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah on Sunday said that the revised syllabus deserves to be thrown into the dustbin. “Education Minister B C Nagesh has revealed the truth. He says syllabus revision has been made as sentiments of Hindus were hurt. “Huge protests have broken out and protesters are Hindus. They do not belong to another religion. Is it not so, Minister Nagesh?” Siddaramaiah questioned. The great personalities like Basavanna, Dr B R Ambedkar, Savithri Bai Phule, Narayana Guru, Kuvempu have been side-lined. The Chairman of the Revision Committee has looked down upon them while defending his revised syllabus. These allegations have been raised by Hindus, Siddaramaiah maintained. He also questioned Minister Nagesh, “why scholars of backward and Dalit classes have not found representation at all in the Textbook Revision Committee. Don’t they belong to the category of Hindus that Minister Nagesh is talking about? They were not given representation because of caste reasons.”
