Chitra Ramakrishna, Ex-NSE Chief, Arrested by CBI in ‘Himalayan Yogi’ Scandal

By India.com News Desk-New Delhi

Chitra Ramkrishna, former chief executive of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) late on Sunday night in connection with the so-called colocation case. Chitra is accused of grave irregularities at the stock market including sharing privileged information with an outsider she dubbed a “Himalayan yogi”, according to media reports. The arrest came just a day after a Delhi Court dismissed her request for pre-arrest bail plea and pulled up the CBI for inaction and being “lackadaisical” in the probe against her in the last four years. The court termed the scam as a “dark period” in the bourse’s history. “Being in pole position in the NSE earlier, there are strong chances that she may influence and tamper with the evidence, as she was Joint MD as well as MD & CEO of the NSE, the role of which is under investigation under the present co-location scam,” the court said. Last month, the mysterious “Himalayan yogi” who allegedly influenced Ramkrishna’s decisions was outed as Anand Subramanian, also a former officer at the stock exchange arrested in a market manipulation case. Anand Subramanian, the former Chief Operating Officer of the NSE, was the “yogi” who communicated with Chitra Ramkrishna through email, the CBI sources said. The CBI has already arrested Subramanian and he is currently in police remand.

India Continuing Efforts to Evacuate Over 700 Students from Ukraine’s Sumy

Separately, the Indian embassy in Hungary said it is in the “last leg” of its evacuation mission and asked students who are staying in their own accommodations to reach Budapest for return to India

India on Sunday continued its efforts to evacuate over 700 Indian students from the embattled northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy but with little success as severe shelling and airstrikes continued. Separately, the Indian embassy in Hungary said it is in the “last leg” of its evacuation mission and asked students who are staying in their own accommodations to reach Budapest for return to India. India has brought back over 15,920 of its nationals in 76 flights under mission “Operation Ganga’ which was launched on February 26 following Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, according to officials here. On Indians stuck in Sumy, people familiar with the matter said there was no indication yet from the Russian and Ukrainian sides to create a “humanitarian corridor” or to put in place a ceasefire to evacuate them notwithstanding India’s repeated calls for such an arrangement. They said India has been stepping up efforts to ensure early evacuation of the students from the Sumy State University.

UP polls: Caste, not Hindutva; jobs, not free rations

In 2017, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections took place against the backdrop of demonetisation and surgical strikes on a terror camp in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). If the Bharatiya Janaya Party (BJP) was successfully able to spin thedemonetisation issue as poor versus wealthy, the surgical strikes were used to whip up an anti-Pakistan mood that got translated into an anti-Muslim mood on the ground. No chief ministerial candidate was named, and it was in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name the election was fought. He was seen both as the saviour of the poor, who had, with a single stroke of the pen, deprived the rich of their wealth, the saviour of the truly nationalistic Indian, and protector of the Hindu religion.
