ALL schools for classes 1 to 12 are set to reopen in Maharashtra barring Pune from Monday as the COVID situation improves in the city. Schools were shut last month after a spike in COVID-19 cases across the state due to the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. “Even though we are

re-opening schools from tomorrow, it is not compulsory for students to come to school. Parents are free to make their own decisions in this regard and should send their children to school only if they feel it is safe,” the Shiv Sena leader said.

Complete thought given to school reopening decision, says govt

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Sunday that the decision was taken after complete thought was given to the issue. Tope said the reopening of schools was necessary for the brain development of children and it was not right to keep them at home for long. The reopening of schools was a risk or middle path the state government decided upon to stop the spread of the virus as well as ensure children do not suffer, he said. “We have given a lot of flexibility and also stressed that following COVID-19 norms is a must,” the minister said, adding that parents must send their wards to school.

COVID cases increasing but hospitalisation low, says govt

While COVID-19 cases have increased over the past few days, 90-95 per cent oxygen and ICU beds are vacant, Tope said, adding that restrictions would be eased if the rate of hospitalization remains low. The minister also informed that 90 per cent of eligible beneficiaries in the state have taken the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while second dose coverage is in the 62-63 per cent range. He, however, said several people had skipped their second vaccine dose and health workers were trying their best to get this section to overcome hesitancy.

The situation will be further reviewed in the coming week, following which a decision will be taken, the minister said.

Ravi Shastri   ‘Could Have Carried on For Two More Years’

Confirming that the future of the team is bright, Shastri also said that Rohit Sharma should now take charge of the team in Test cricket.

Cape Town:

A little more than a week after Virat Kohli shocked one and all by announcing his resignation as Test captain, ex-India coach Ravi Shastri – who has worked closely with the former – reckoned he could have continued as the captain for a couple of more years. While reckoning he could have continued as the leader, Shastri reminded fans that his decision should be respected.“  I felt that he could easily continue for next two years, but now as he has stepped down, we should all respect his decision,”

Shastri told The Indian Express on the sidelines of the Legends League Cricket in Oman. Confirming that the future of the team is bright, Shastri also said that Rohit Sharma should now take charge of the team in Test cricket. “First thing, the future of the team is very bright. From what I have seen in seven years, the new talent that is coming in is amazing. As far as the captain is concerned, Rohit is the captain in two formats. He was appointed vice-captain of the Test team that went to South Africa, but he couldn’t go due to injury. This means that he must be being thought of as the captain,” he said. Earlier, Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain and that created a huge row ahead of the South Africa tour. Kohli and BCCI were at loggerheads after the former went on to contradict BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s statement. There are also speculations that KL Rahul is also a contender for the job.

New age tech stocks Zomato and Paytm continued to remain under pressure today, hitting their respective lows since listing. Zomato slumped over 18% in Monday’s early deals to 92 apiece on the BSE. On the other hand, Paytm shares were trading nearly 4% lower at 924 apiece.  The food delivery platform Zomato got listed in July 2021 and is up more than 30% from its IPO issue price of 76. Meanwhile, Paytm is down over 57% from its issue price of 2,150.“The trend in global stock markets has turned distinctly bearish. Last week S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed 8% and 15% below their all time highs. The sell-off in tech stocks has

been brutal last week. European stocks too turned bearish. An important feature of the tech sell-off is that bulk of the selling is happening in non-profitable tech stocks. This trend is impacting stocks like Zomato and Paytm in India too,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. There is a risk-off situation across the globe amid fear of tightening by the US Fed where the trend shows a sharp sell-off in growth stocks especially loss-making new age companies that came out with unrealistic valuations amid euphoria in the market, as per analysts. “We know that only a few companies will survive in the long run and I believe Zomato has the potential to perform in the long run. The recent price correction is leading to stock at a reasonable valuation where aggressive investors can use this correction as a buying opportunity with a long-term view,” said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart.
