This was the fourth time England chased down a target of over 250 in the fourth innings, the earlier three being against New Zealand — 277, 299, 296 — in their 3-0 home Test series win last month.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow scored majestic centuries as England pulled off their highest-ever successful run chase in the longest format for a convincing seven-wicket win over India in the rescheduled fifth Test here on Tuesday. Joe Root slammed his 11th Test century since 2021 while Jonny Bairstow hit his second of the rescheduled Edgbaston Test as England defeated India by seven wickets on day five of the match. Resuming from 259/3, Root (142 not out off 173 balls) and Bairstow (114 not out off 145 balls) achieved the required 119 runs in an hour and a half to tie the series being played for the Pataudi Trophy 2-2 and deny India their first series victory in England since 2007. The successful chase of 378 is also the highest they have chased ever in Test cricket. A 269-run partnership between Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow helped England create history, with the side completing their highest successful run chase ever in the longest format of the game with a seven-wicket win over India in the fifth and final Test of the series at Edgbaston in Birmingham. They were able to successfully chase down the target of 378 runs set by India. This win comes after England was bundled out for 284 in the second innings of the game, trailing the game by 132 runs after India posted a massive 416 in the first innings. India was bundled out for 245 in the third innings of the match, setting a target of 378 for England to win. With this, England has levelled the series 2-2, denying India their first series win on English soil since 2007. They have also completed the most successful run chase at Edgbaston. India has also been handed over their first Test loss while defending a total of 350 or more.

Jasprit Bumrah Blames Batting After Edgbaston Loss in 5th Test

India ended up on the losing side on Tuesday despite dominating the first three days during the fifth Test at Edgbaston and stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah labelled it as ‘the beauty of Test cricket’ after the seven-wicket loss. Bumrah also went on to blame the batting for the loss. “I won’t go that far ahead (of calling himself an all-rounder). That’s the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us,” Bumrah said at the post-match presentation.

New Maharashtra LoP Ajit Pawar: NCP’s seasoned survivor and 2024 polls lynchpin

The selection of senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar, 62, as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra Assembly has again signalled that he remains the best bet for the party when it comes to facing electoral challenges. In the previous Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Ajit Pawar had been the deputy chief minister, which had marked his return to the centre-stage of state politics despite having raised a banner of revolt briefly against his uncle and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar by getting sworn in as deputy CM along with Devendra Fadnavis as the CM in a dramatic, albeit short-lived, development just before the MVA’s formation in November 2019. During the MVA government’s 31-month tenure, Ajit was said to be the de facto CM who would regularly work from the state government’s Mantralay headquarters amid the Covid-19 pandemic. CM Uddhav Thackeray, on the other hand, preferred working mostly from his official residence “Varsha”. Following the establishment of a new government involving the Eknath Shinde-led rebel Sena faction and the BJP, the NCP (53 MLAs) got an upper hand over the Uddhav-led Sena (15) and the Congress (44) in staking claim over the LoP’s post. The NCP leadership took the decision to appoint Ajit as the LoP after carefully weighing its pros and cons. With Pawar Senior continuing to call the shots in the party organisation, many were skeptical on whether Ajit would get this key position or not. Pawar Senior has always exercised caution not to hand over any post to family members on a platter. Whether it is Ajit or daughter Supriya Sule, an MP, they have been subjected to rigorous political grind to prove their mettle before given positions. A seven-time MLA, Ajit Pawar has been winning from the Baramati Assembly constituency since 1991. Apart from a brief stint as a Lok Sabha MP in early nineties, his politics has always remained confined to Maharashtra.NCP insiders said that “Ajit Pawar will have to navigate through plenty of challenges in his role as the LoP”. They conceded that his new role will demand a tightrope walk as any aggressive politics against the new government would entail a “heavy price” with the “sword of central agencies like the ED hanging over him and some other NCP leaders”.

Ajmer Dargah cleric threatens Nupur Sharma with ‘beheading’, FIR lodged

Recently, four people were arrested in connection with another provocative speech allegedly delivered at the main gate of the Ajmer Dargah on June 17.

Police are on the lookout for a cleric at the Ajmer Dargah after he allegedly offered on camera to gift his house to anyone who beheads now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her remark on Prophet Mohammad. The Rajasthan Police registered an FIR Monday night on the basis of a complaint against Salman Chishti, a dargah ‘khadim’, over a video clip. In the video, the cleric purportedly says he would give his house to anyone who brings Sharma’s head to him. Chishti is heard saying that he would have shot her dead for insulting Prophet Mohammad. “You have to give a reply to all Muslim countries. I am saying this from Ajmer, Rajasthan and this message is from Huzur Khwaja Baba ka Darbar,” he said in the video, referring to the Sufi shrine that sees many Hindu visitors, apart from Muslim devotees. Dargah Station House Officer Dalveer Singh Faujdar said efforts are on trace the ‘khadim’. He said the accused has a criminal background. Recently, four people were arrested in connection with another provocative speech allegedly delivered at the main gate of the Ajmer Dargah on June 17. Though that video was in circulation earlier, the arrests were made after the murder a week back of an Udaipur tailor by two men who said they were avenging an insult to Islam. Hours after the Udaipur murder that triggered communal tension in the state, the two main accused were caught by police. Three others were arrested later and the National Investigation Agency is now handling the case. Condemning the latest video, the office of Ajmer Dargah Dewan Zainul Abedin Ali Khan said the shrine is seen as a place of communal harmony. The views expressed by the ‘khadim’ in the video cannot be considered a message from the dargah, it said. It added that the remarks were a statement by one individual and were highly condemnable.

At Zee anchor’s Ghaziabad residence, Chhattisgarh police comes to arrest, UP police intervenes

The incident triggered a political storm with the Congress accusing UP police of having “deliberately interfered” with an “ongoing investigation to shield an accused”.

DAYS AFTER Zee News apologised for airing a misleading video of Rahul Gandhi, linking his comments on the SFI attack at his office in Wayanad to the Udaipur killing over remarks on the Prophet, a police team from Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh reached the Ghaziabad residence of the channel’s anchor Rohit Ranjan on Tuesday to arrest him. The police action, based on a complaint filed by a Congress MLA in Raipur, led to dramatic scenes with the UP police also reaching the residence of Ranjan, who had anchored the showDelhi News | Delhi News Today | Delhi News Updates when the clip was aired, and taking him into custody in a related case registered against two colleagues by the channel. The channel had earlier apologised for airing the clip. The incident triggered a political storm with the Congress accusing UP police of having “deliberately interfered” with an “ongoing investigation to shield an accused”. “They have deployed state machinery, without cause or explanation, to hide an individual accused of serious offences from a legitimate investigation,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said. Hitting back, the BJP described the Chhattisgarh police’s move as “absolute misuse and overreach” of power sanctioned by the Congress for “revenge”. “As per news reports all the procedures were not followed by the cops. Was Rohit issued summons? Is direct arrest needed in such cases? Has SC not clarified this already? This is becoming a pattern and design… nothing can justify this,” BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala tweeted.
