BJP report on Birbhum killings will weaken and interfere with CBI probe, says Mamata Banerjee
She said that there should not be interference from any political party into the investigation
PTI, Darjeeling, MAR 30 2022
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said a BJP fact-finding panel’s report on Birbhum killings, submitted to party president J P Nadda, will weaken and interfere with the CBI probe into the incident. Eight people were burnt alive, and one succumbed to injuries later, after the murder of local TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh in Bogtui village near Rampurhat on March 21. Lashing out at the saffron party, Banerjee said that the report mentions the name of TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, which “clearly shows the vindictive attitude of the BJP”. “The BJP report on Bogtui killings will weaken and interfere with the probe. I condemn this attitude of the saffron party,” Banerjee told reporters in the hill town. She said that there should not be interference from any political party into the investigation. “They have mentioned my district president’s name. This is biased and vindictive attitude. Without completion of probe, how can they name him? It shows they want him to get arrested. This is personal vendetta. They are hatching a conspiracy,” she said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the case as per Calcutta High Court’s order. An SIT formed by the West Bengal government was earlier investigating the case.
Hijab issue: 40 Muslim girls abstain from PU exams in Udupi
Those who shunned the examinations include 24 girl students from Kundapur, 14 from Byndoor and two from Udupi Government Girls PU college, who are involved in the legal fight over wearing of hijab in classrooms

Forty Muslim girl students from Udupi district of Karnataka abstained from appearing for the first pre-university examination on Tuesday as they were apparently hurt by the recent High Court verdict against wearing of hijab inside classrooms. The students decided to not appear for the examination without wearing the headscarf as they were hurt by the March 15 order, sources said. The Karnataka High Court on March 15 had dismissed petitions seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom, saying the headscarf is not a part of the essential religious practice in Islamic faith and also stated that the uniform dress rule should be followed in educational institutions where it has been prescribed. Those who shunned the examinations on Tuesday include 24 girl students from Kundapur, 14 from Byndoor and two from Udupi Government Girls PU college, who are involved in the legal fight over wearing of hijab in classrooms. The girls had earlier boycotted the practical examinations also. At the RN Shetty PU college, 13 out of 28 Muslim girl students appeared for the examination. Though some students reached the examination centre wearing hijabs, they were denied permission. Four out of five girl students appeared for the examinations at Bhandarkar’s college in Udupi, while all the girl students of Basrur Sharada college attended the examinations. Six among the eight girl students of Navunda Government PU College abstained from the examinations, while only two out of 10 Muslim girls appeared for the examinations. The Supreme Court on March 24 refused to accord urgent hearing on the pleas challenging the Karnataka High Court verdict. The students, though, are planning to wait till the apex court gives an order on the issue.
Uddhav Thackeray had written to PM Modi to consider changing Nanar Oil Refinery location: Sources
Instead of Nanar, the Maharashtra government has proposed a land parcel of 13,000 hectare at Barsu village in Ratnagiri district for the refinery and a land parcel of 2,144 acre in Nate village for the Crude Oil Terminal
By Vishwas Waghmode | Mumbai |
Days after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the Maharashtra government seems to be changing its mind on the Nanar Oil Refinery Project in Konkan and is hoping for a revival, it has emerged that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January requesting to consider a new location for the project in the Ratnagiri district. Sources said that the CM has justified the new locations stating that “almost 90 per cent land parcel is barren and no displacement of houses/wadis is estimated since the villages are located outside the project area.” Thackeray has said that the land parcel is free from all encumbrances and that it can be used without disturbing the ecological balance. Thackeray has also conveyed to the PM that the project was initially proposed at Nanar in Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra but it could not be executed due to environmental and rehabilitation constraints. Sources in the government said that the Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemical Limited (RRPCL) has reportedly given positive feedback about the new locations. The facility, which was to come up at Nanar, was cleared by the Centre and state government in December 2015 and was to pass through a land spread across 17 villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. It was to come up as a 50:50 joint venture between Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemical Limited (RRPCL) — its investors were Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum — and a partnership between the Saudi-owned Aramco and UAE’s National Oil Company. The government had initiated the process of the land survey when it was shelved suddenly before the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 over “environmental concerns” expressed by the Sena following opposition from the locals. The Sena, in fact, had made it a condition of its pre-poll alliance with the BJP ahead of the elections. The debate on the oil refinery project was revived after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that indications have been given by the Maharashtra government about changing its mind on it.
