‘Not Okay With Removing Hijab’: Karnataka Teacher Resigns From College

Karnataka HC to hear students’ plea today against ban on hijab
A teacher at a college in Karnataka had reportedly resigned from her post over the hijab row

New Delhi: A teacher at a college in Karnataka had reportedly resigned from her post over the hijab row. The teacher said she was “not okay” or not comfortable with removing her hijab while resigning from the job, according to a report by India Today. This comes a day after the Karnataka government on Thursday issued a circular where it said the wearing of hijab is not permitted in minority institutions run under the state government. Secretary for Minority Welfare, Haj and Wakf Department Major P. Manivannan stated that, the interim order of the full bench of the High Court also applies to residential schools run under the Minority Welfare Department and Moulana Azad Model Schools (English medium). All educational institutions run by the Minority Welfare Department have been ordered not to allow hijab, scarves, saffron shawls and other religious symbols in the classrooms. The circular quoted the order, “we request the state government and all their stakeholders to reopen the educational institutions and allow the students to return to the classes at the earliest. Pending consideration of all these petitions, we restrain all the students regardless of their religion or faith from wearing saffron shawls (Bhagwa), scarfs, hijab, religious flags or the like within the classroom, until further orders.” “We make it very clear that this order is confined to such institutions wherein the college Development Committees have prescribed the student dress/uniform.” The circular mentions that it is issued after it has come to the notice that women students are attending classes in hijab.

The Karnataka Minority Welfare Department issued an order on Thursday restraining students of minority institutions run by the government from wearing hijab, scarfs or saffron shawls, news agency ANI reported. A circular issued by Major Manivannan P, secretary in the department of minority welfare, Hajj and Wakf Department, said the Karnataka High Court has in its interim order restrained all the students regardless of their religion or faith from wearing saffron shawls, scarves, Hijab, religious flags or the like within the classroom, until further orders. “The above High Court order is applicable to residential schools, colleges, Maulana Azad Model English Medium schools coming under the minority welfare department. Against this background, wearing saffron shawl, scarves, Hijab or any other religious flags is prohibited in the schools and colleges and Maulana Azad Model English Medium schools, which come under the minority welfare department,” the order read. Interestingly, the uniform for students in some minority institutions includes the hijab itself. As per the government order, students can come to campus wearing hijab but cannot attend classes wearing it. The circular was issued a day after state Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnarayan said that the High Court’s interim order was not applicable for degree college students. The order comes amid simmering tension in the schools and colleges over minority girls with Burqa and Hijab being denied entry in the schools and colleges, following last week’s High Court order. Meanwhile, cases were registered against nine people for violating the prohibitory orders issued by the Shivamogga district authority under Section 144 of the CrPC. They had staged protest against the PU College authorities in the district headquarter town for not letting the Muslim girls with Burqa on the campus.
